Following early career success as a performer opening for folks like Bob Hope, Johnny Mathis and Jackie Mason, I had an epiphany while on a National Tour of CAROUSEL that my true passion was on the creative side – both directing and composing. That my artistic core was that of a storyteller; collaborating with other artists toward a common vision, resulting in audiences experiencing theatre, not just observing it.
My life was irrevocably changed in 1987 when my partner/husband and I founded Music Theatre of Connecticut, now an award-winning Equity regional theatre one hour outside Manhattan. As Artistic Director working with veteran Broadway and Connecticut professionals, we take audiences on innovative journeys several times each season. I have reinvented large musicals like EVITA, GYPSY and JEKYLL & HYDE, telling their stories in powerful and intimate ways; as well as bringing audiences up close and personal in compelling pieces like MASTER CLASS and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. In 2016, I went back to my New York roots, directing PLAY LIKE A WINNER at NYMF which won awards both as a reading in 2016 and a full production at Playwrights Horizons in 2017.
After more than 40 years as a professional, my heart still beats with the pulse of the kid who put on shows in his parents’ Midwestern garage. I am grateful every day to feel that same excitement, passion and joy of discovery and creation that has made me the artist I am today.
